Pantheon: Extra Minor Deities
This post makes a small addition to my setting's pantheon. Kyuss is a well-known being in the D&D universe, but the other three deities are only mentioned once, barely have any description, and one of them doesn't even have his domains listed.
Vesperian
Lesser deity
Alignment: Neutral Good
Symbol: two spiraling stalactites
Home plane: Elemental Plane of Earth
Domain (-30%): sound spells, darkness spells
Portfolio: desmodus, protection, darkness
Worshipers: desmodus
Vesperian is the creator and protector of the
desmodus. Typically, there is a shrine dedicated to him in every desmodu enclave,
and many dwellings also boast private altars to Vesperian.
Dogma: Vesperian
encourages his followers to value family bonds, venerate the elders, and keep
the enclave safe.
Diophia
Lesser deity
Alignment: Neutral
Symbol: a stylized image of four diopsid arms
Home plane: Elemental Plane of Earth
Domain (-20%): earth spells, protection spells,
movement spells
Portfolio: diopsids, earth, protection
Worshipers: diopsids
Diophia is a patron goddess of the diopsids.
The diopsids see the surface world as a terrible place of constant ordeals. A
diopsid who ventures to the surface is seen as a mighty hero, one worthy of the
highest praise. The surface dwellers usually are pitied, as they have to endure
such hard life.
Dogma: Diophia’s
dogma is simple – protect your home and do everything to make it prosper.
Thelmeth
Lesser deity
Alignment: Neutral
Symbol: a sphere divided in two halves – one black,
one white
Home plane: Outlands
Domain (-20%): knowledge spells, meta spells,
protection spells
Portfolio: dvati, knowledge, magic, protection
Worshipers: dvati
Thelmeth the Unifier is typically depicted as a
pair of male dvati twins clad in golden robes and wearing laurel wreaths, with
each twin carrying a pair of large books.
Dogma: Thelmeth
encourages his followers to help the community, help the lost find their home
or their partner.
Kyuss
Demigod
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Symbol: a skull erupting with writhing green
worms
Home plane: Prime Material Plane
Domain (-30%): necromantic spells, poison
spells
Portfolio: worms, creation and mastery over the
undead
Worshipers: necromancers, undead, avolakias
Kyuss is a demigod concerned with the creation and
mastery of the undead, also known as the Bonemaster, the Wormgod, and the
Herald of the Age of Worms. Clerics of Kyuss raid graveyards to create undead,
selling their creations or letting them run wild. The more powerful ones seek
to create new kinds of undead, and seek lichdom or some other form of undeath
for themselves.
Dogma: Kyuss's
faithful believe that life is obscene, death offers only nothingness, and that
undeath is the only worthwhile goal. Followers of Kyuss are committed to
creating undead wherever they can; whilst they are permitted to control them if
necessary, they are encouraged to set their creations free when they have no
further use for them. Undead are sacred to Kyuss, and his followers are
forbidden from destroying them except in self-defense.
Hypnatia
Greater deity
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Symbol: a golden ring
Home plane: Region of Dreams
Portfolio: dreams, sleep
Domain (-30%): dream spells, sleep spells, fate spells, knowledge spells
Worshipers: oracles, artists
The Mistress of Dreams appears to mortals as a woman with long, flowing hair that streams into the darkness behind her. Some claim that she personifies the Region of Dreams itself, while others put forward the idea that all reality is but her dream.
Hypnatia is said to have thousands of children who work dreams small and large, who tame nightmares and hunt night hags, and who keep the universe working on her behalf.
Clerics of Hypnatia believe in the power of dreams and visions, and they often seek out signs and oracles to reveal the best course of action.
Phobetor
Lesser deity
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Symbol: a crimson skull, laughing on a black field
Home plane: Demiplane of Nightmares
Portfolio: nightmares, insomnia, guilt
Domain (-40%): dream spells, sleep spells, illusion spells.
The Bringer of Nightmares looks like a hulking figure in demonic armor with glowing red eyes, armed with a hooked sword with which he pulls out the dreams of sleeping individuals and tortures them.
Phobetor is the youngest of Hypnatia’s children. He is the master of night terrors and fear-sweat dreams. He enters individual dreams in the same manner as a night hag, tormenting the poor dreamer until dawn. His minions are the darkest of dream creatures, and he delights in persecuting those who have restful sleep, much to his mother’s dismay.
Priests of Phobetor believe in the virtue of terror, that only by showing others the deadly power of dreams can they retain their power. Out of fear comes strength, and out of strength comes the power of fear.
Phantasia
Lesser deity
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Symbol: a white mask with a manic grin on a field of blue
Home plane: Region of Dreams
Portfolio: ideas, invention, imaginations
Domain (-30%): dream spells, sleep spells, knowledge spells
Worshipers: inventors, artists
The Lady of Inspiration is depicted as a slender, short-haired woman, clothed in a simple shift. Her image usually appears with half-elven characteristics and spiked, blond hair. She often wears a manic, feral grin.
Phantasia is the eldest of Hypnatia’s children, and the first of her lieutenants in the waking world. It is she who visits the dreams of philosophers and poets, engineers and inventors, bringing with her the bright light of revelation and the fire of inspiration. Unfortunately, these truths can be too much for the dreamer.
Priests of Phantasia believe in innovation and novelty. They recognize that the old must be swept away to create anew. Though she battles her youngest brother Phobetor on a regular basis, she is no more welcome than her sibling among the waking people, and her mother has had to rein her in on several occasions.
