Treasure Type in GURPS

Treasure Type in GURPS

There is one major thing left to do to enable BrOSR-style games in GURPS, and that is treasure assignment/generation. This post on the Axioms of the Addled Antillectual blog worked out the $-to-CP progression based on the ACKS II assumptions. While it does indeed allow us to simply use treasure tables from ACKS, I'm not completely satisfied with this approach, and I decided to write this post to organize my thought process and, hopefully, devise a solution.

More Gems for DF

More Gems for DF

GURPS Dungeon Fantasy 8: Treasure Tables has quite a few gems and a way to determine their value from their size. Each gem has a Value modifier (V), and weight is measured in carats (C). But what if you want more variety? Dungeon Master's Guide for D&D 3.5 has more gems, and it is even possible to derive the Value modifiers for them. So, let's combine the two sources. And just for the heck of it, why not add pictures? I don't know what some of the gemstones look like, so it'll be useful to me as well.

Treasure: Special Materials X

Treasure: Special Materials X

There is one topic that I haven't finished yet - converting D&D special materials to GURPS. I think I did all the Pathfinder ones and many of the D&D ones, but not all of them. So, it's time to get back to work, because I love me some materials.

Grafting: Half-Golems

Grafting: Half-Golems

As I have reached the letter H of the Monster Manual II, I have to tackle half-golems. Since they are so varied, it makes no sense to represent them as racial templates or lenses. In the past, I wrote up a a post on grafting, mentioning the so-called golemics - mechanical (usually) replacement limbs for fantasy games.

Equipment: PHB Adventuring Gear in GURPS

Equipment: PHB Adventuring Gear in GURPS

Player's Handbook for D&D 3.5 has a relatively long list of various adventuring gear pieces (most of which become irrelevant past the first few levels). I'll just go through the list and try to find analogs in GURPS.

Equipment: Exotic D&D Weapons

Equipment: Exotic D&D Weapons

You probably are aware of some exotic D&D weapons that you've always wanted to use. Some of them were quite lame mechanically, some of them were quite good. So, let's see how to makem them in GURPS and if some of them already exist.

Treasure: Drow Magic Items

Treasure: Drow Magic Items

It's been a very long time since I've made any treasure posts. There's been a request to convert some magic items from the Drow of the Underdark for AD&D. I was asked to convert the driftdiscs, the spider wand, and house insignias. While the first two are possible, I will forego converting the insignias - each one of them pretty is a unique item with unique abilities, so you cannot really convert a generic insignia.

Grafting: Vile Deformity

Grafting: Vile Deformity

I converted quite a lot of content from the Book of Vile Darkness, but I forgot something - vile deformity. In my games, this self-mutilation uses the same rules as grafting, so let us stat up some vile deformities as grafts.

Treasure: Special Materials IX

Treasure: Special Materials IX

A long time ago, I converted all the special materials from Pathfinder. Let's convert some special materials from D&D 3.5 too.

Powers/Treasure: Psychobotanics

Powers/Treasure: Psychobotanics

The Psi, -10% power modifier consists of -5% for the existence of anti-powers and -5% for the existence of psychotronics that can hinder the use of psionics. But what about low-TL games? You could rework the power modifier (like in Dungeon Fantasy), but there is also a sidebar in GURPS Psionic Campaigns that suggests to change the psychotronic part to its low-TL equivalent - psychobotanics. However, it doesn't really provide any guidelines.

Treasure: Epic Artifacts

Treasure: Epic Artifacts

In this post, I will convert artifacts from the Epic Level Handbook for D&D 3.0 to GURPS. As before, items whose effects cannot be replicated properly with advantages, or those that can be replicated, but cost so much that the price is way off the chart, will be without the statblock.

Treasure: Epic Wondrous Items

Treasure: Epic Wondrous Items

Yet again, the Epic Level Handbook for D&D 3.0 doesn't provide many items, except for normal wondrous items, but with bigger numbers.

Treasure: Epic Weapons

Treasure: Epic Weapons

This post will convert epic weapons from the Epic Level Handbook for D&D 3.0 to GURPS. Just like with most of the epic magic items, most of these are just normal magic items, but with bigger numbers.

Treasure: Epic Armor

Treasure: Epic Armor

Epic Level Handbook is one of the few D&D books available on the SRD. It has some high-power magic items, but most of them are just "normal magic item, but with bigger numbers." So, it shouldn't be difficult to convert them. This post will detail epic armor.

Treasure: Artifacts

Treasure: Artifacts

Finally, we can take care of the artifacts from the Dungeon Master's Guide for D&D 3.5. Some of the items have such effects that either cannot be properly represented with advantages or can be represented, but cost so much that the price will break the bottom of the inherent value table and bankrupt a medieval multimillionaire. That is, those items should be used as major rewards, epic treasures, etc., but not as items to craft or sell. Statblocks for those are omitted (or maybe I'm just being lazy). That's another milestone reached - now all the treasure has been ported over to GURPS. I think I'm done with all the core books already: spells, spellcasting traditions/classes, monsters, treasure, special materials, crafting. Time to move on to something else. Maybe finish the mind flayer-related monsters.

Treasure: Cursed Items

Treasure: Cursed Items

Now let's convert the specific cursed items from the Dungeon Master's Guide for D&D 3.5 using the method based on the one described by Pseudonym (I think he missed the Melee Attack, Reach C, -30% limitation).

Treasure: Magic Weapons II

Treasure: Magic Weapons II

And the second half of the magic weapons from the Dungeon Master's Guide for D&D 3.5. This one covers specific magic weapons and artifact weapons. Not much left in terms of magic items!
