Treasure: Staffs

Treasure: Staffs

This post contains all staffs (staves?), including the artifact staffs, from Dungeon Master's Guide for D&D 3.5 converted into GURPS.
A staff is a long shaft of wood that stores several spells as alternative abilities. Unlike wands, which can contain a wide variety of spells, each staff is of a certain kind and holds specific spells. A staff uses the Staff, x0.35 form multiplier from GURPS Thaumatology: Sorcery, p. 28, and, typically, can be used as a quarterstaff (p. B273). Vulnerable to disarming attempts. The Unnaturally Tough, +0.05 additional modifier sometimes is used, because the staff is usually quite expensive.

Unlike wands, staffs do not require the user to spend their own FP to cast the spells. Each staff has a built-in magical “battery” that holds 50 charges when created. These charges cannot be replenished. Spells can only use these charges and may have different charge cost. This adds the Accessibility, FP costs must use built-in ER, -5% to all spells. The staff’s user cannot use extra effort when casting a spell through the staff.

To avoid cluttering the statistics blocks, each spell will only have its name listed with the additional modifiers that are inserted into its internal construction. Thus, the cost recalculation is done in the background, and these modifiers are not applied to the final point cost.
Let’s make the ER advantage that will represent the internal charges of the staff.

Staff ER (Magical; Abilities Only, -10%; Accessibility, Only to power the staff’s spells, -40%; Single Use, x0.2) [0.3/level]. Thus, the standard Staff ER 50 will cost 15 points. It is not taken as an alternative ability to the spells.

Also, I would suggest using the following new perk.

Staff Caster
This perk comes in two levels. The first level lets the caster have spells cast through staffs originate not from them, but from the tip of their staff. This allows delivering touch spells on a slightly longer distance, and sometimes can decrease the range penalty for ranged spells. The second level of this perk lets the caster have these benefits not only when casting spells contained in staffs, but also any spells the caster can cast by themselves.

Staff of the Magi

Staff of the Magi – as an enchanted item (using Sorcery)
A long wooden staff, shod in iron and inscribed with sigils and runes of all types, this potent artifact contains many spell powers and other functions. Some of its powers use charges, while others don’t. The following powers do not use charges:
-          Apportation 1;
-          Armor 1 – GURPS Sorcery: Protection and Warning Spells, p. 4;
-          Detect Magic – GURPS Thaumatology: Sorcery, p. 19;
-          Enlarge Other 2 (70 points in extra ST);
-          Light 1  – GURPS Thaumatology: Sorcery, p. 19;
-          Magelock 1 – GURPS Thaumatology: Sorcery, p. 23.
The following powers drain 1 charge per usage:
-          Create Door;
-          Dispel Magic 1 – GURPS Thaumatology: Sorcery, p. 21;
-          Explosive Fireball 2 – Pyramid #3-63, p. 7;
-          Locksmith – GURPS Thaumatology: Sorcery, p. 22;
-          Personal Invisibility;
-          Spider Silk;
-          Stroke of Lightning 2.
These powers drain 2 charges per usage:
-          Greater Planar Summons (determine the plane when crafting);
-          Ice Storm;
-          Plane Shift (Improved);
-          Wall of Fire 3.
Unlike a normal magical staff, the staff of the magi’s 50 charges can be replenished. The staff grants the wielder Magic Resistance 3 (Improved) (p. B67). Whenever a spell is cast on the wielder, they can waive their bonus to resist from Magic Resistance and instead roll their unmodified resistance roll. The caster still gets a penalty equal to that MR. If the spell fails for whatever reason, the wielder gain a number of character points equal to the spell’s modified Fatigue Point cost to cast (e.g., reduced by high skill). The staff replenishes a charge for each gained character point.
A staff of the magi can be used for a retributive strike, requiring it to be broken by its wielder. (If this breaking of the staff is purposeful and declared by the wielder, it can be performed as a Ready maneuver.) All charges currently in the staff are instantly released in an 8-yard radius, dealing 12d burning damage to everything in the area. The character breaking the staff has a 50% chance of traveling to another plane of existence, but if he does not, the explosive release of spell energy destroys him. Once empty of charges, the staff of the magi cannot be used for a retributive strike.

-          Dispel Magic 1 – GURPS Thaumatology: Sorcery, p. 21;
-          Explosive Fireball 2 – Pyramid #3-63, p. 7;
-          Locksmith – GURPS Thaumatology: Sorcery, p. 22;
-          Personal Invisibility;
-          Spider Silk;
-          Stroke of Lightning 2.
These powers drain 2 charges per usage:
-          Greater Planar Summons (determine the plane when crafting);
-          Ice Storm;
-          Plane Shift (Improved);
The staff has SM-3, DR 4, HP 13, 4 lb.

 NEW SORCERY SPELLS

    Insect Control
    Keywords: Resisted (Will).
    Full Cost: 18 points.
    Casting Roll: IQ.
    Range: Unlimited.
    Duration: Special.

    You can take control of any single insect – or of one square yard of a swarm of smaller insects. The victim obeys your every command, effectively gaining the Reprogrammable disadvantage with you as the master. Only insects with a racial IQ of 1-5 or less can be affected, though the GM may make exceptions for insects with IQ 6 and Bestial. In addition to range penalties, your casting roll is at -1 for each other animal currently under your control. If you tie, nothing happens, but if you lose the creature is immune to you for 24 hours and can sense your attempted coercion; the GM will make a new reaction roll at -2, using the worse of its existing or new reaction.
    This spell has an indefinite duration if you take constant Concentrate maneuvers to keep it active (and pay the usual 1 FP per minute). Once you stop concentrating, it continues to last for a fixed duration (at no FP cost) in minutes equal to the margin by which you won the initial Quick Contest. If you lose consciousness, the spell ends immediately.
    Statistics: Mind Control (Accessibility, Insects only, -50%; Sorcery, -15%) [18].

Shadow Bolt
Keywords: Missile, Obvious.
Full Cost: 8 points/level.
Casting Roll: None. Use Innate Attack (Projectile) to hit.
Range: 100 yards.
Duration: Instantaneous.

A bolt of shadow springs from your hand, draining vitality where it strikes. This attack deals 1d fatigue damage per level and can be blocked or dodged, but not parried.
Statistics: Fatigue Attack (Blockable, -5%; Sorcery, -15%) [8/level].

Shadow Form
Keywords: None.
Full Cost: 103 points.
Casting Roll: None.
Range: Self.
Duration: Indefinite.

The caster and everything they are carrying up to their Heavy Encumbrance become a two-dimensional shadow. The caster can slip along walls and floors – and through the thinnest cracks (anything wide enough to fit their shoulders through) – at their usual ground Move. They can also turn 90° to a surface and stand up in three-dimensional space – like a two-dimensional “cutout” – in order to bridge gaps, walk normally, or turn around. They can also defy gravity, creeping up walls and across ceilings at half Move.
Physical attacks do half damage to the caster in this form. Energy attacks do normal damage, except for light-based attacks, which do 50% extra damage. Purely mental abilities affect them normally. The caster cannot perform any purely physical attacks or actions, but use magic, psi, and similar abilities.
Statistics: Shadow Form (3-D Movement, +20%; Can Carry Objects, Heavy, +100%; Sorcery, -15%) [9].

Summon Swarm
Keywords: None.
Full Cost: 47 points.
Casting Roll: None.
Range: Touch.
Duration: Indefinite.

Summons an insect swarm (GURPS Dungeon Fantasy 5: Allies, p. 9) that does your mental bidding while it exists. The swarm appears within the arm’s reach.
If the swarm is killed, the summoner must wait a full day to call replacements. Dismissing the swarm is a free action, but it may only be dismissed if it is physically present. This spell can only be cast if the summoner’s point total is equal or higher bigger than the swarm’s.
Statistics: Ally (Insect Swarm; Built on 100%; Constantly, No roll required; Conjured, +100%; Minion, +50%; Sorcery, -15%) [47].
