Monsters: Ethergaunts

Monsters: Ethergaunts

Ethergaunts are one of my favorite monsters from Fiend Folio. Enigmatic aberrations from the Deep Ethereal that used to have a multiplanetary empire on the Material Plane. Now they want it back. Mind control, a maddening appearance, innate spellcasting, immunity to magic, and bits of ultra-tech? What not to like here?

Innate Spellcasting: Only arcane spells. Improvisation up to 3 points, hardcore improvisation up to 28 points. Improvisation requires one minute of concentration.
Ethereal Jaunt (13): The ethergaunt can slip into the Material Plane from the Ethereal Plane as per Jumper (p. B64). This ability can be used only once per day. The ethergaunt remains on the Material Plane for margin of success minutes. When this duration is up or the ethergaunt is killed, he is returned to his previous location.
Stupefying Gaze: An ethergaunt can open and close its vertically bisected mask as a Ready maneuver, revealing a horrifically alien morass of facial organs and orifices. When a creature sees an ethergaunt’s face, it must roll a Fright Check using the Confusion table (GURPS Powers, p. 85). If a victim succeeds at his Fright Check, he will be unaffected by this ability for one hour. Ethergaunts are immune to this.

Etherblade
Resembling a short glaive topped with a hollow barrel, this favored weapon of the ethergaunts can fire an invisible ray of force using the Beam Weapons (Rifle) skill. This force attack can damage insubstantial beings. The weapon can fire 50 times before it is exhausted. It cannot be recharged.

Doubt Bomb
This small ceramic sphere contains a chemical mixture intended to overstimulate the “doubt centers” in the brain. This grenade can be thrown (range is STx3.5). Upon impact, it explodes, creating a cloud of stunning gas in a 4-yard radius. The cloud persists for 10 seconds and may drift with the wind. Any creature that inhales the gas makes an IQ roll to resist. Should it fail, it becomes mentally stunned. It can recover on the next turn as normal. Ethergaunts are immune to the effects of doubt bombs.
LC: 2.
Duration: 10 seconds; stun is instantaneous.
Form: Grenade.
Cost: $1,050 (singular); $380 (5-batched).
Recipe: $105; 7 days; defaults to Chemistry-4.
Statistics: Affliction 1 (IQ; Accessibility, Not against ethergaunts, -5%; Area Effect, 4 yards, +100%; Based on IQ, +20%; Drifting, +20%; Grenade, +25%; Persistent, +40%; Respiratory Agent, +50%) [35].
