Treasure: Necklace of Fireballs
Necklace of Fireballs is a classic D&D wondrous item. To port it to GURPS correctly, I had to dissect it into the individual beads and then calculate how much all typical combinations cost.
Bead of Fireball
(2d)
Bead of Fireball (2d) – as an enchanted item (using
Sorcery)
This
small SM-8 golden sphere can be thrown up to STx3.5 yards. When the sphere
arrives at the end of its trajectory, it detonates, dealing 2d burning damage (on
a miss, check for scatter; see p. B414). The target takes damage normally;
anything nearby receives “collateral damage” equal to basic damage divided (2 x
the distance in yards from the blast).
If
the sphere takes at least 3 points of damage from a fire attack, make an HT
roll for the sphere (typically, HT is 10). If the sphere fails the roll, it
detonates, often with regrettable consequences for the wearer.
Statistics:
Burning Attack 2d (Explosion 2, +100%; Increased 1/2D, x10, +15%; Increased
Range, x3.5, +20%; Limited Use, 1 use (1 shot), Slow Reload, -25%; Magical,
-10%; Muscle-Powered Range, -10%; Nuisance Effect, Explosive, -10%) [18]. Grenade,
One Use, x0.2; 4 EP.
TL3
Price: 2 x ($30 + 4 x $320) = $2,620.
TL8 Price: 2 x ($600 + 4 x $1,180) =
$10,640.
Bead of Fireball (2d) – as a metatronic generator
(using Pyramid 3-46)
This
small SM-8 golden sphere can be thrown up to STx3.5 yards. When the sphere
arrives at the end of its trajectory, it detonates, dealing 2d burning damage (on
a miss, check for scatter; see p. B414). The target takes damage normally;
anything nearby receives “collateral damage” equal to basic damage divided (2 x
the distance in yards from the blast).
If
the sphere takes at least 3 points of damage from a fire attack, make an HT
roll for the sphere (typically, HT is 10). If the sphere fails the roll, it
detonates, often with regrettable consequences for the wearer.
Statistics:
Burning Attack 2d (Explosion 2, +100%; Increased 1/2D, x10, +15%; Increased
Range, x3.5, +20%; Limited Use, 1 use (1 shot), Slow Reload, -25%; Magical,
-10%; Muscle-Powered Range, -10%; Nuisance Effect, Explosive, -10%) [18].
TL3
Cost: 2 x 18 x $175 / 5 = $1,260.
TL8 Cost: 2 x 18 x $3,500 / 5 = $25,200.
Bead of Fireball
(3d)
Bead of Fireball (3d) – as an enchanted item (using

This
small SM-8 golden sphere can be thrown up to STx3.5 yards. When the sphere
arrives at the end of its trajectory, it detonates, dealing 3d burning damage (on

nearby receives “collateral damage” equal to basic damage divided (2 x the distance
in yards from the blast).

the sphere takes at least 3 points of damage from a fire attack, make an HT
roll for the sphere (typically, HT is 10). If the sphere fails the roll, it
detonates, often with regrettable consequences for the wearer.
Statistics:

Range, x3.5, +20%; Limited Use, 1 use (1 shot), Slow Reload, -25%; Magical,
-10%; Muscle-Powered Range, -10%; Nuisance Effect, Explosive, -10%) [27]. Grenade,
One Use, x0.2; 6 EP.

Necklace of
Fireballs
Necklace of Fireballs – as an enchanted item (using
Sorcery)
This
device appears to be nothing but beads on a string, sometimes with the ends
tied together to form a necklace. If a character holds it, however, all can see
the strand as it really is—a golden chain from which hang a number of golden
spheres. The spheres are detachable by the wearer (and only by the wearer), who
can easily hurl one of them up to STx3.5 yards. Detaching a sphere requires a
Ready maneuver, and a character cannot throw multiple spheres at once. When a
sphere arrives at the end of its trajectory, it detonates, dealing burning
damage (on a miss, check for scatter; see p. B414). The target takes damage
normally; anything nearby receives “collateral damage” equal to basic damage
divided (2 x the distance in yards from the blast).
If
the necklace is being worn or carried by a character who takes at least 3
points of large area damage from a fire attack (or if the necklace is targeted
by a fire attack directly, the necklace has SM-7), make an HT roll for the
necklace (typically, HT is 10). If the necklace fails the roll, all its
remaining spheres detonate simultaneously, often with regrettable consequences
for the wearer.
Spheres
come in different strengths, ranging from those that deal 2d burning damage to
those that deal 10d6 (see Beads of Fireball above). Each necklace of fireballs
contains a combination of spheres of various strengths. Some traditional
combinations, designated types I through VII, are detailed below.
