Arena: Titan vs. Marut

Arena: Titan vs. Marut

This time we decided to have two big, strong creatures fight each other - a titan and a marut.

Second 1

Marut: We determine the ready spell randomly and get Fist of Lightning 1. The marut switches to Axiomatic Weapon.

Titan: We determine the ready spell randomly and get Complex Illusion 1. The titan switches to Chain Lightning 3. We also determine the starting reach of the weapon here randomly and get Reach 6.

Second 2

Marut: The marut enchants his fist with Axiomatic Weapon. This is very useful, because the titan has vulnerability to axiomatic weapons.

Titan: The titan casts Chain Lightning 3 at the marut. Range penalty is -5, marut's SM is +2. (Rolls 10 vs. 15). The marut rolls against his dodge. (Rolls 10 vs. 10). He remains unharmed.

Second 3

Marut: The marut advances towards the titan.

Titan: The titan swings his mattock at the marut. (Rolls 7 vs. 18). The marut dodges. (Rolls 9 vs. 10). This fight probably would've been over if not for this dodge. Should've used Deceptive Attack with such high skill.

Second 4

Marut: The marut decides to do an All-Out Attack (Strong) to deliver a slam using his fist (that's allowed as per GURPS Martial Arts). He also makes it a Deceptive Attack, taking -4 to skill, but imposing a -2 penalty to defenses. (Rolls 15 vs. 14). That's a very unlucky miss. He runs past the titan for two yards.

Titan: The titan drops his mattock (it's a two-handed weapon that must be readied after use) and grapples the marut by the torso with both hands. (Rolls 13 vs. 24). The grab connects.

Second 5

Marut: The grappled marut decides to punch the titan in the groin with his enchanted metal fist. (Rolls 15 vs. 11). Not his day.

Titan: The titan shifts his grip to the marut's neck. This maneuver is described in GURPS Martial Arts. He rolls against his Wrestling. (Rolls 11 vs. 20). The marut rolls against his DX. (Rolls 10 vs. 10). The grip is shifted successfully.

Second 6

Marut: The marut switches his active spell to Fist of Lightning 1 (Edit: This is a mistake, you cannot Concentrate while grappled, unless you play with Technical Grappling).

Titan: The titan does a Neck Snap. He rolls against his ST-4. (Rolls 13 vs. 46). The marut rolls against his ST. (Rolls 12 vs. 30). Now the titan rolls swing-based crushing damage against the marut's neck. (Rolls 22 on 8d-1). Rigid DR protects normally, and Injury Tolerance (Unliving) does not decrease the wounding multiplier. So, after subtracting DR 6, the marut takes 16 x 1.5 = 24 injury. That's not even a major wound, but the marut is now at HP 28.

Second 7

Marut: The marut punches one of the arms that are strangling him. (Rolls 17 vs. 16). The dice hate him today.

Titan: The titan does another Neck Snap. He rolls against his ST-4. (Rolls 10 vs. 46). The marut rolls against his ST. (Rolls 15 vs. 30). Now the titan rolls swing-based crushing damage against the marut's neck. (Rolls 30 on 8d-1). After subtracting DR 6, the marut takes 24 x 1.5 = 36 injury. The marut rolls against HT to stay conscious. (Rolls 10 vs. 14). He's okay, relatively speaking.

Second 8

Marut: The marut rolls against his HT to stay conscious. (Rolls 7 vs. 14). Now he can perform the action he planned to perform - punch the arm again. (Rolls 11 vs. 16). The titan dodges. (Rolls 9 vs. 9). That's a successful dodge. I imagine he just shook the marut and foiled his attack.

Titan: The titan does another Neck Snap. He rolls against his ST-4. (Rolls 8 vs. 46). The marut rolls against his ST. (Rolls 14 vs. 30). Now the titan rolls swing-based crushing damage against the marut's neck. (Rolls 21 on 8d-1). After subtracting DR 6, the marut takes 15 x 1.5 = 22 injury.

Second 9

Marut: The marut rolls against his HT to stay conscious. (Rolls 9 vs. 14). Now he punches the arm with All-Out Attack (Determined) and Deceptive Attack (-6/-3). (Rolls 11 vs. 16). The titan dodges. (Rolls 9 vs. 6). That's a hit! First, he rolls the punch's damage. (Rolls 13 on 3d+2). This penetrates DR 10, dealing 3 injury. Then, he rolls the linked burning surge damage. (Rolls 10 on 3d). This does not penetrate DR. The Fist of Lightninig also produces a bright flash. The titan rolls against HT to resist the blinding effect. (Rolls 8 vs. 15). He's fine. The marut rolls too, but at +5. (Rolls 14 vs. 19). He's fine too.

Titan: The titan does another Neck Snap. He rolls against his ST-4. (Rolls 7 vs. 46). The marut rolls against his ST. (Rolls 16 vs. 30). Now the titan rolls swing-based crushing damage against the marut's neck. (Rolls 16 on 8d-1). After subtracting DR 6, the marut takes 10 x 1.5 = 15 injury.

Second 10

Marut: The marut rolls against his HT to stay conscious. (Rolls 12 vs. 14). Now he punches the hand with All-Out Attack (Determined) and Deceptive Attack (-4/-2). (Rolls 8 vs. 16). The titan dodges. (Rolls 8 vs. 7). That's a hit! First, he rolls the punch's damage. (Rolls 7on 3d+2). This does not penetrate DR 7. Then, he rolls the linked burning surge damage. (Rolls 9 on 3d). This does penetrate DR and deals 2 injury. The titan first rolls against HT-1 to avoid stun caused by the electric shock. (Rolls 10 vs. 14). The Fist of Lightninig also produces a bright flash. The titan rolls against HT to resist the blinding effect. (Rolls 13 vs. 15). He's fine. The marut rolls too, but at +5. (Rolls 9 vs. 19). He's fine too.

Titan: The titan does another Neck Snap. He rolls against his ST-4. (Rolls 7 vs. 46). The marut rolls against his ST. (Rolls 12 vs. 30). Now the titan rolls swing-based crushing damage against the marut's neck. (Rolls 32 on 8d-1). After subtracting DR 6, the marut takes 26 x 1.5 = 39 injury. The marut has Unnatural, so he dies, as this puts him below -1xHP.

Conclusion

It was fun to see high-point, high-ST, and high-SM combatants fight. The fight really did not go as expected, and the dice hated the marut a lot. Next time, we will probably do a "many against one" fight.

  1. Completely unfair dice rolls, but it was fascinating to see what a huge difference 20 ST makes in a grappling scenario. I wonder how things might have differed in technical grappling.
