Monsters: Rats
I bet you all have heard stories of low-level adventurers clearing out basements from rats. Of course, most adventurers succeed, unless there's a giant fire-breathing rat in the basement. Here are some rat templates - a common rat, a cave rat, and a dire rat. Their only difference is their strength and size, but you can add some variety by altering some attributes. For example, you can increase a dire rat's HP, make it Fat, and lower its DX and/or Basic Speed to create bloated dire rats. Common and cave rats are not formiddable opponents, but they can be used as familiars, pets, or food.

Handy creatures, these - thanks for that!
ReplyDeleteNot sure what to think of 1d-12, however! (0DMG for days)
Thanks! 1d-12 cutting still deals 1 damage minumum, I think. And there is something about fractional damage in the KYOS article too.
DeleteI found myself wondering about that - I swear you're right and there's a rule that says so, but I do not recall where.
DeleteBasic Set, page 378
DeleteJust did the math, so I thought why not post it.
ReplyDeleteRat has CER 6 (OR = 3 PR =3)
Cave Rat has CER 11 (OR = 6, PR = 5)
Dire Rat has CER 17 (OR = 9, PR = 9)
This, as is plainly obvious, means that all of these monsters are pretty easy for an average 250 point Dungeon Fantasy character... 1 on 1. The dire rat might be a real problem in a group of at least 4:1, for example.
Oh wait, add 1 to PR and CER for each for the combat Reflexes, making them 7,12, and 18 respectively.
DeleteThanks for the calculations! They weren't even supposed to be threats to DF characters. Maybe for their familiars.
