Arena: Let's try out Expanded ANTOG
Not that long ago, A New Take on Grappling from Pyramid #3-34 got expanded. Let's give it a run. For this example, I'll do something relatively simple - a one-on-one fight between a sumo wrestler (after all, the Grand Tournament is in two weeks or so) and an orc with a knife. I will be using the optional rule that deemphasizes ST outlined at the end of the document.
Sumotori
ST 14 HP 18 SM+0
DX 11 BS 5.5 thr/sw 1d/1d+2
HT 11 FP 11 BL 39 lbs.
Basic Move 5
Dodge: 8
Parry: 10 (sumo wrestling)
Sumo Wrestling-14
Typical Grappling Contest Scores: Sumo Wrestling (ST/HP-based): 21/23.
Punch (11): thrust 1d-1 crushing, Reach C.
Kick (9): thrust 1d crushing, Reach C-1. Roll against DX on a miss or dodge to avoid falling down.
The sumotori is naked, and hence has +1 to Escape rolls.
In addition, he's wearing a mawashi (the belt) that counts as a good handhold if you manage to grab it. It probably should also give DR to the groin, but that probably won't come up.
Orc
ST 13 HP 13 SM+0
DX 12 BS 6 thr/sw 1d/1d+1
HT 12 FP 12 BL 34 lbs.
Basic Move 6
Dodge: 9
Parry: 9 (knife); 10 (wrestling)
Knife-14; Wrestling-14
Typical Grappling Contest Scores: Wrestling (ST/HP-based): 20/20.
Large Knife swing (14): swing 1d-1 cutting, Reach C-1.
Large Knife thrust (14): thrust 1d impaling, Reach C.
Punch (12): thrust 1d-1 crushing, Reach C.
Kick (10): thrust 1d crushing, Reach C-1. Roll against DX on a miss or dodge to avoid falling down.
The orc is wearing regular clothing.
Second #1
Orc: Takes a step sideways and readies his large knife in Defensive Grip.
Sumotori: Moves five yards.
Second #2
Orc: Evaluate.
Sumotori: All-Out Defense (Improved Dodge) and two steps into close combat.
Second #3
Orc: Wait to perform a Stop Hit (p. MA108) with the knife thrust at a random hit location.
Sumotori: Tries a two-handed grapple of the orc's torso. [Sumo Wrestling-14; Roll 13; MoS 1][Knife 14 - 2 Defensive Grip + 1 Evaluate = 13; Roll 11; MoS 2] The orc wins, so the sumotori defends at -1. The sumotori tries a Dodge. [Dodge 8 - 1 Stop Hit = 7; Roll 8]. The orc rolls damage. [Hit location roll 10 -> torso; 1d (vitals?) = 3 -> no][1d imp + 1 Defensive Grip; Roll 5 = 10 injury] The sumotori is at HP 8/18. That was a major wound, so the sumotori has to roll against HT. [HT 11; Roll 11]. Barely made it. However, the orc still has to Parry. [Parry 9 + 1 Defensive Grip = 10; Roll 7]. This is a success. Thus, another attack roll is required to hit at -4 (in ANTOG, all unarmed grappling skills benefit from the -4 penalty imposed by Judo). [Knife 14 + 1 Evaluate - 4 "Judo" = 11; Roll 15]. That's a miss. The orc leaves his knife inside to establish a bind.
Second #4
Orc: Ready to relinquish Defensive Grip and get a free hand.
Sumotori: Step back, breaking the bind, and All-Out Defense (Improved Parry).
Second #5
Orc: Swings his knife as a random hit location, then steps into Reach C with the sumotori. [Knife-14; Roll 7; Hit location roll 11 -> groin] The sumotori tries a Grabbing Parry against the arm. [Parry 10 + 2 AoD - 2 Grabbing Parry = 10; Roll 12] That's a failure. And here am I, wondering why I thought that groin DR would not matter here. I'd say that the mawashi gives DR 1 - it does weigh about 15 lbs. after all. The orc rolls damage. [1d-1 cutting; Roll 5 - DR 1 = 4 cut; 4 x 1.5 = 6 injury (ouch)]. The sumotori is at HP 2/18, now reeling.
Sumotori: The sumotori does a two-handed grapple against the orc's torso. [Sumo Wrestling 14 - 4 shock = 10; Roll 10]. The orc does a retreating parry. [Parry 9 + 1 retreat = 10; Roll 11]. The grab lands!
Second #6
Orc: The orc tries a stab at a random hit location. This now requires a Grappling Contest. [Sumotori's Control Arm 21 - 2 torso grab = 19; Roll 8; MoS 11][Orc's Grappling Contest 20; Roll 13; MoS 7]. The sumotori succeeds, stopping the thrust. Note: We agreed later that this is not how it is supposed to be done - you roll to attack first, and defend with a Grappling Contest only on a potential hit.
Sumotori: The sumotori goes for a Committed Attack (Determined) Judo Throw to land the orc on his side (that's a -1 penalty). Legs go into the current hex, and upper body into the northern hex. [Sumo Wrestling Contest 21 - 2 Judo Throw - 1 land on the weapon arm side - 1 drive into the ground + 2 Committed Attack = 19; Roll 6; MoS 13][Orc's Grappling Contest 20; Roll 5; MoS 15] The orc actually manages to win the contest, so the throw fails.
Second #7
Orc: Drops the knife and tries a two-handed grapple at the mawashi. [Wrestling 14 - 2 handhold grab = 12; Roll 9]. This is a potential hit. The sumotori is reeling, so dodging is very suboptimal. He will opt to defend with a Grappling Contest based on Control Arm. [Sumo Wrestling Control Arm 21 - 2 torso grab - 2 Committed Attack = 17; Roll 16; MoS 1][Orc's Wrestling Contest 20; Roll 12; MoS 8]. The orc successfully grabs the mawashi.
Sumotori: The sumotori repeats the previously failed maneuver - Committed Attack (Determined) Judo Throw to land the orc on his side (that's a -1 penalty). Legs go into the current hex, and upper body into the northern hex. [Sumo Wrestling Contest 21 - 2 Judo Throw - 1 land on the weapon arm side - 1 drive into the ground + 2 Committed Attack = 19; Roll 9; MoS 10][Orc's Grappling Contest 20 + 1 handhold grab; Roll 9; MoS 12] No luck.
Second #8
Orc: The orc tries a Judo Throw of his own. He will do it as an All-Out Attack (Determined) for a +4 bonus, drop to kneeling for another +2, and take a -1 to drive the opponent into the ground. Damage is to the torso, and the opponent should land in the water hexes. [Orc's Wrestling Contest 20 + 4 AoA(D) + 2 drop to kneeling - 1 substitute thrust damage + 1 handhold grab = 22; Roll 17; MoS 5][Sumotori's Sumo Wrestling Contest score 21 - 2 Committed Attack = 19; Roll 15; MoS 4]. The orc succeeds! [1d crushing; Roll 6]. The sumotori rolls against Breakfall [Breakfall 14 - 1 was driven into the ground = 13; Roll 10; MoS 3]. This reduces the actual damage from 6 to 3, which brings the sumotori do HP -1/18. He rolls against HT to avoid stun. [HT 11; Roll 14]. He's stunned, and we can now assume that the sumotori is defeated.
Conclusion
Well, not that much unusual happened here, but I'm glad we gave it a try. Now I understand the system better, and we figured out the grappling defense conundrum. The "good handhold" rule was used too, which is nice. Also, the sumotori forgot that he could substitute HP for ST when resisting the Judo Throw, but it's too late now!
