Alchemy: Alternative Elixir Forms
Metatronic Alchemy already has quite many different elixir forms that should satisfy most players and GMs. I've added some more, like paints, dehydrated potions, and alchemical capsules, but the possibilities do not end there! Let's create meta-modifiers for variant elixirs described in Complete Arcane for D&D 3.5.
Magic Fruit
-25%
A potion-fruit might consist of a slice or section of a fruit steeped in a magical libation that produces its effect when consumed. A magic fruit must be ingested to take effect. Once in hand, it takes a Ready maneuver to eat it. One dose affects one man-sized creature instantly. Magic fruits rot and lose their powers as normal fruits (usually in 5 days, unless refrigerated). A typical magic fruit’s effect lasts 1 hour, but this can be changed. A magic fruit weighs 0.5 lb., has SM-6 and Bulk -3. This is a Mini item.
Statistics: Blood Agent, -40%; Extended Duration, 30x, +60%; Fixed Duration, +0%; Melee Attack, Reach C, Cannot Parry, -35%; Nuisance Effect, Rots, -10%.
Magic Tile
+15%
A small ceramic tile inscribed with a magic rune could hold a potion-type effect. When it is snapped or broken in one’s hand, the effect is released. Once in hand, it takes a Ready maneuver to break it. Roll thrust damage – if it is 2 or more, then the tile is broken. Roll thrust+2 if using both hands, or thrust+3 if breaking one with both hands against your knee. Unlike potions, such elixirs do not have to be digested and can be used by creatures that normally do not benefit from potions, such as constructs. A typical magic tile’s effect lasts 1 hour, but this can be changed. A magic tile weighs 0.5 lb., has SM-6 and Bulk -3. This is a Mini item.
Statistics: Blood Agent, -40%; Extended Duration, 30x, +60%; Fixed Duration, +0%; Melee Attack, Reach C, Cannot Parry, -35%; Nuisance Effect, Hard to break, -10%.
Skull Talisman
+25%
The skull of a small animal (a bird, mouse, or rat, for example) is enchanted with a single spell. When crushed in one’s hand or underfoot, the skull talisman releases its stored effect. It takes a Ready maneuver to crush it. Unlike potions, such elixirs do not have to be digested and can be used by creatures that normally do not benefit from potions, such as constructs. A typical skull talisman’s effect lasts 1 hour, but this can be changed. A skull talisman weighs 0.08 lb., has SM-8 and Bulk -1. This is a Tiny item, so use costs as for Alchemical Capsules.
Statistics: Extended Duration, 30x, +60%; Fixed Duration, +0%; Melee Attack, Reach C, Cannot Parry, -35%.
Spell Wafer
-25%
A thin wafer of specially prepared bread or dough, stamped with a holy or arcane symbol, can hold a spell as well as a potion bottle can. When the wafer is consumed, the stored magic takes effect. Once in hand, it takes a Ready maneuver to eat it. One dose affects one man-sized creature instantly. Spell wafer gets moldy and loses their powers as normal bread (usually in 5 days). A typical spell wafer’s effect lasts 1 hour, but this can be changed. A spell wafer weighs 0.5 lb., has SM-6 and Bulk -3. This is a Mini item.
Statistics: Blood Agent, -40%; Extended Duration, 30x, +60%; Fixed Duration, +0%; Melee Attack, Reach C, Cannot Parry, -35%; Nuisance Effect, Get moldy, -10%.
