Monsters: Myconids

Monsters: Myconids

I've always liked myconids, but I don't think I've had a chance to use them. Throughout their short lifespan, they go through six stages that differ in physical and mental characteristics. Their spores were quite interesting to build mechanically. I'd suggest giving them weapons, but Monster Manual II lists them as unarmed.

Distress Spores: A myconid can release distress spores to alert all other myconids within 32 yards of danger. He cannot release these spores in a normal situation, “sounding” a false alarm. Success means that they get enough warning to take action in any situation involving an ambush, impending disaster, or similar hazard.
Rapport Spores: A myconid can release rapport spores either in a 32-yard-radius area around him or as a jet. Using this as an area effect requires no roll, but using it as a jet requires an Innate Attack (Breath) roll. Treat it as a melee weapon with a very long reach rather than as a ranged weapon. Do not apply penalties for target range and speed. The rapport spore jet has no Acc, and has 1/2D 5 and Max 10. Regardless of the form, any creature that breathes in these spores becomes able to telepathically talk to everyone else affected by the rapport spores, including the myconid that released the spores. This telepathic speech is automatically translated into the subject’s language. Range is theoretically unlimited, but the IQ roll to use this ability takes the range penalties given under Long-Distance Modifiers (p. B241). If you cannot see or otherwise sense your subject, you have an additional penalty, as described in Telesend (p. B91). This effect’s duration is 30 minutes.

Traits: Dark Vision; Doesn’t Breathe (Oxygen Absorption); Immunity to Metabolic Hazards; Injury Tolerance (Homogenous, No Blood, No Neck); Limited Camouflage (Fungus); Mute; Reduced Consumption 4 (Cast-Iron Stomach); Restricted Diet (Herbivore); Short Lifespan 2; Slow Eater; Weakness (Sunlight; 1d/30 minutes).

Animation Spores: When released over a dead body, animation spores begin a process that covers the corpse with purple fungus. After 1d/2 days, during which the myconid must tend to the growing fungus at least for 8 hours total, the corpse reanimates as a servant. A servant has all the characteristics of a zombie, except that it is not considered undead and it cannot be turned or otherwise affected as an undead. Over the course of 1d weeks, a myconid-animated corpse slowly decays. At the end of that period it simply disintegrates into dust. A myconid can only have one servant at the same time.
